Sara BoettigerDirector, Strategic Initiatives
Sara is the Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Institute for Transformative Technologies (ITT), where she is focused on enhancing ITT’s program portfolio and building its network of partners.
As an economist focused on innovation and international development, Sara previously worked with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she helped to shape their agricultural development strategy as Deputy Director. She is an experienced social impact adviser on a wide range of subjects such as philanthropic strategy, application of technologies in new markets, corporate governance, and intellectual property rights. As an independent consultant, she has supported philanthropic foundations, investment funds, governments, and companies in achieving social impact for their investments.
Sara also currently serves as a senior adviser at McKinsey and Company, and on the board of directors for The Summit Institute (a social entrepreneur convener), the Planetary Skin Institute (a remote sensing non-profit, former JV between Cisco and NASA), and the Living New Deal (a public works archivist in the US). She was previously a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Councils, and Chair of the Board of Trustees of CIMMYT, an international agricultural research center.
She has taught at UC Berkeley, where she received her doctorate in agricultural and resource economics; and was a faculty fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society.
Sara lives in San Francisco Bay Area. In her spare time, she enjoys music, baking pies, writing, and playing with her grandchildren.
